Benjamin Meck in cast of Living Out

2014 Feb 27

Benjamin Meck, of Northampton, will appear on stage in HCC's Spring 2014 theater production of Living Out.

The HCC Players will present the play by Lisa Loomer April 24-26, with a matinee performance on April 26 at 2 p.m. All performances will be held in the Leslie Phillips Theater in HCC's Fine and Performing Arts Building.

The play is being directed by HCC theater professor Patricia Sandoval with set design by theater professor Chris Hoyt.

Sandoval said 42 students auditioned for the eight stage roles. "I was impressed by how serious, eager and prepared students were," Sandoval said. "The students were so good, I wanted to cast more of them. It was the most difficult cast list I've ever had to make."

The play is set in present day Los Angeles. It tells the story of a complicated relationship between Ana, a Salvadorian nanny, and the lawyer she works for. Both women are smart, hard-working mothers. Both want better lives for their children. The play explores the shared humanity between them -- and the differences wrought by race, class and Ana's illegal status.

The play remains both funny and tragic as it looks at the prejudices and misconceptions between different cultures.

Tickets are $10 (general admission); $8 for students and seniors; and $5 for members of the HCC community (students, staff and faculty) with a valid I.D.
